  • It’s thought that around 1 in 3 people will suffer from insomnia at some stage during their life. For some individuals this takes in the form of delayed and shortened sleep and for others it is a complete inability to drop off. For people suffering from insomnia, sleep is anything but relaxing. Instead it becomes a struggle to get rest.

Insomnia can be caused by many different things. For some individuals, it may be caused by an underlying medical condition. For others, anxiety or overthinking may make it difficult to relax and sleep at night. Whatever the cause, sufferers from insomnia will often feel tired and irritable with some having a greater susceptibility to illness and depression.

Acupuncture is a common therapy nowadays used in treating insomnia with clinical studies showing that acupuncture may have a beneficial effect on insomnia when compared with Western medication. According to TCM the body's energy circulates through 12 meridians, which are linked to internal organs and emotions. The heart channel, for example, relates to anxiety, the liver meridian to stress and anger and the spleen to worry. Too much of any emotion will affect the correlating meridian and create an imbalance of energy in the body. It is said that this imbalance may be the cause of your insomnia.

At Dublin Acupuncture Rooms we work to restore balance and the free flow of energy by placing and inserting needles in points along the meridian channels. Depending on how long you have been suffering insomnia and the cause of your problem, it is most likely that you will need a number of acupuncture sessions to get you back to full health.
