  • The musculoskeletal system is made up of connective tissues which include joints, ligaments and tendons. When problems occur with the musculoskeletal system, this can result in inflammation and pain. An ever increasing safe and effective therapy which can deliver instant pain relief is acupuncture. Acupuncture is growing increasingly popular due to the little or no side effects associated with it.

Common types of musculoskeletal problems we see daily in our clinic include:

Tennis Elbow: in simple terms this is “elbow pain “. It is a common condition that occurs by the overuse of the arm, forearm and hand muscles. It commonly affects the dominant arm and presents as persistent pain radiating from the elbow joint or as weakness at the wrist. It is an injury to the muscles and tendons around the outside of the elbow. Generally speaking, tennis elbow is more common in men than women. A general acupuncture treatment will include surrounding the site of pain with needles and applying some light electro-acupuncture and moxa. Many patients will obtain significant improvement within a few treatments scheduled once or twice a week.

Frozen Shoulder: a condition known as adhesive capsulitis, a frozen shoulder can cause severe pain and shoulder stiffness. The tissue which surrounds your shoulder becomes inflamed and thickened. The condition is quite a debilitating condition due to the affected shoulder becoming stiff and difficult to move. This can cause simple tasks to become excruciatingly painful and difficult to perform. If you suffer from frozen shoulder you most likely are unable to raise your arms above your head. Our electrical nerve stimulation device used in conjunction with acupuncture and moxa offers many patients instant relief. For continued relief a course of treatments may be best recommended.

Symptoms of TMJ include a stiff jaw and pain chewing and eating. Stress is a known factor that compounds the symptoms of TMJ. Quite frequent patients will also present complaining of headaches and migraines alongside TMJ pain. In treating this condition we find that acupuncture applied with some Chinese cupping can offer our patients the most relief from pain.
