Chinese cupping therapy, otherwise known as fire cupping, is a treatment often used in traditional acupuncture. It is a health remedy used to balance the body’s natural flow of energy “qi”. In essence, cupping therapy restores your body to its natural optimum health by balancing the flow of energy.
How Chinese Cupping Therapy Works:
A vacuum is created inside a glass bamboo cup by lighting a small amount of surgical spirits inside the cup and then applying it (the bamboo cup) upside down to the patients’ skin (often the back). While the air inside the glass cup cools, skin, flesh and muscle is pulled upward into the vacuum that has been created. The seal created by the rim of the bamboo cup and the skin, cuts off the flames oxygen supply and extinguishes them thus preventing the patient from being burnt.
The theory behind Chinese cupping is that the vacuum stimulates red blood cell production which in turn boosts the immune system and detoxes the body. The heat and vacuum combine to increase blood circulation to the area as well as help massage the muscles. In fact, Chinese cupping has also been proven to reduce stress, increase energy levels, aid weight-loss and help fertility. Surprising as it may seem cupping is not at all painful. Some patients even go so far as to describe it as a relaxation therapy!
It should be noted that cupping can leave marks or bruises which indicate that the stagnation or disease has been moved from the deeper tissue layers to the surface. Most marks however will disappear within one week from the therapy.
For those who prefer, we also offer suction cups which do not require the fire to create the vacuum.
